About Swayzee's family

Every year, hundreds of youth age out of foster care in Indiana. The transition to independence can be tough! Young people
in Firefly’s Older Youth Services program have elected to build their skills and self-reliance with help from a case worker.
Most either work full-time or attend school with part-time employment. It means
so much to these young adults to know someone is in their corner - especially during the holidays!
About E
Age: 20 | Gender: Female | Race: Hispanic or Latino
EL, 20, is a wallflower. She hates being in the spotlight and prefers to be in the background. Never wanting to cause a fuss, issues or trouble anyone, she learned to be very independent and handled everything on her own. We have had to work on learning that it is okay to ask for help when you need it. She hasn’t mastered the skill but has come a long way. EL will be starting the Ivy Tech Nursing Program in January 2024 and is really curious about where she will be placed to get hands on experience. "She never brags on herself so I have to," shares her case manager. "She got an A in Anatomy and Physiology when she took it as an 8-week class. Yup, she took a normally 16-week class in 8 weeks and got an A. When I took Anatomy and Physiology it was difficult in 16 weeks, I can’t imagine how hard it was and how much work she had to do in 8 weeks to learn everything needed to get an A in the class."
